1. Nhãn Rambutan
Nhãn rambutan has round-shaped fruits with short hairs. The skin changes color as it ripens—from green to yellow, then pink, and finally red. The fruit is relatively small, weighing about 20-30 grams each, which is why it is called “Nhãn” rambutan. The harvest season usually lasts from April to June (lunar calendar).
This variety is also known as “sugar rambutan” because its flesh is crisp, easily separates from the seed, and tastes sweet like sugar with a fragrant aroma. Additionally, nhãn rambutan is quite affordable and easy to find.
2. Java Rambutan (Tróc Rambutan)
Java rambutan, also called tróc rambutan, is commonly found in areas like Đồng Nai, Bến Tre, and Vĩnh Long. This variety was mainly imported from Indonesia and Thailand.
Its distinguishing features include large fruits, long hairs, sweet taste, and flesh that does not cling to the seed. Java rambutan and nhãn rambutan are the two most popular types supplying most of the domestic market.
3. Sticky Rambutan (Chôm Chôm Dính)
Sticky rambutan is now quite rare on the market because it is less favored by consumers. It has large fruits with long hairs and soft flesh that sticks to the seed. The taste is sweet and juicy, but due to inconsistent quality, very few people choose this variety nowadays.
4. Thai Rambutan (Chôm chôm Thái)
Thai rambutan, also known as Rong-riêng rambutan, has become quite popular recently. The fruits are relatively large, weighing between 50-70 grams each, with thick flesh that easily separates from the seed. The seed is flat and very small. When ripe, the hairs on the skin turn green while the skin itself is bright red, which is visually appealing.
The flesh is crisp and delicious with a mild sweetness, making it ideal for those who enjoy fruit but prefer less sugary options compared to nhãn rambutan. Although the price is relatively high, many consumers are willing to buy it for their families because of its great taste.
